Olympique Lyonnais has received formal praise from French football's financial watchdog, the DNCG, for its drastic reduction of the club's wage bill over the past season. The recognition, delivered by DNCG president Jean-Marc Mickeler in an interview with L'Équipe, comes less than a year after Lyon faced administrative relegation before being reprieved on appeal.
Mickeler highlighted the scale and speed of the club's financial restructuring under its new leadership. "The new management team has stepped up with a reactivity and determination that commands respect," Mickeler stated. "The reduction of the wage bill achieved in one season is unprecedented in the recent history of French professional football. It is a considerable effort, and we fully acknowledge it." This marks a significant turnaround for Lyon, which has undergone a period of significant upheaval both on and off the pitch.
The DNCG president drew a contrast with the situation at Olympique de Marseille, another club under scrutiny. "Marseille made the choice of maximum sporting ambition by anticipating European revenues that did not materialize at the expected level," Mickeler explained. He noted that owner Frank McCourt and the new management are fully aware of the necessary adjustments. Mickeler emphasized the DNCG's role is to accompany such emblematic clubs back to financial equilibrium, not to destabilize them.
The comments underscore a broader financial challenge within French football. Mickeler revealed that, on average, clubs that have been in Ligue 1 over the last three seasons have reduced their wage bills by approximately 25%. He acknowledged the considerable efforts of some clubs and credited shareholders for making significant financial contributions to prevent more severe situations. This context of enforced austerity is set to define a potentially turbulent summer transfer window for many Ligue 1 sides.
For Lyon, this public endorsement from the governing body provides a vote of confidence in its current trajectory and may offer greater flexibility as it plans its squad rebuild. The club's ability to meet the DNCG's stringent requirements so rapidly suggests a stabilized foundation from which to operate in the market, albeit with continued financial discipline.
