Real Madrid have seen a €150million bid for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez rejected, the club confirmed in a statement on Monday. The offer, made following Florentino Perez’s re-election as club president, was turned down with Atletico referencing the player’s substantial release clause.
Perez had pledged to pursue a player valued at €150million if re-elected, signalling Real Madrid’s intent to make a significant impact in the transfer market under newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho. However, their initial approach for Alvarez, also a target for Barcelona and Arsenal, proved unsuccessful.
Atletico Madrid acknowledged the offer, expressing gratitude for the proposal made within the context of a positive relationship between the two clubs, but ultimately rejected it, citing the player’s release clause. That clause is reported to be €500million, though journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested provisions exist for a lower fee should Alvarez seek a move.
Alvarez joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024 and has become a key figure in their attack. While he is reportedly favouring a move to Barcelona, reports in Spain suggest Perez is determined to secure two ‘world-class signings’ this summer, with a combined investment of around €300million. Alvarez and Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez have been identified as potential targets.
The failed bid for Alvarez represents an early setback for Real Madrid as they attempt to rebuild their squad under Mourinho. The club will likely explore alternative options as they aim to strengthen their team for the upcoming season. Securing high-profile additions will be crucial as they look to challenge for domestic and European honours.
