Juventus Complete Signing of Bologna's Calafiori in €40m Deal
Juventus have finalized the signing of defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna in a deal worth €40m (£34m), the Serie A club confirmed on Wednesday. The 22-year-old Italian international has signed a five-year contract through 2029, with the fee including potential add-ons based on performance targets.
Calafiori's move follows an impressive breakthrough season where he helped Bologna secure Champions League qualification for the first time in the club's history. His versatility as a left-sided center-back and wing-back made him a priority target for Juventus manager Thiago Motta, who previously worked with the player at Bologna during the 2022/23 campaign.
The transfer represents a significant profit for Bologna, who signed Calafiori from Basel for €4m in 2022. Juventus sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli described the defender as "a modern profile who fits our tactical evolution" in an official club statement. Calafiori becomes Juventus' third summer signing after Michele Di Gregorio and Douglas Luiz.
Calafiori's arrival provides immediate reinforcement to a Juventus defense that conceded 31 league goals last season - their highest tally since 2010/11. The move also continues Bologna's strategy of developing young talents before facilitating high-value transfers, following last summer's €115m sale of Joshua Zirkzee to Manchester United.
