Filip Pavic, the 16-year-old defender at FC Bayern München, has declared his intention to represent Croatia at the international level, despite previously featuring for Germany’s youth teams. The decision marks a shift in allegiance for the young player, who was born in Freising, Germany, to a Croatian family. Pavic has represented Germany 13 times at various youth levels, but has opted to pursue his international career with the Croatian national team.
Pavic explained his decision in a released statement, expressing his gratitude towards Germany for the opportunities he has received. He acknowledged growing up and developing as a footballer within the German system, and his continued opportunity to play for Bayern München. However, he also highlighted his strong connection to his Croatian heritage and his desire to represent the nation on the international stage. The defender emphasized the importance of his family roots in influencing his choice.
The young defender recently made his senior debut for Bayern in a Champions League match against Atalanta in March, entering as a substitute during the 4-1 victory. This appearance signaled a breakthrough moment for Pavic, who has been progressing through the Bayern youth academy. He is regarded as a promising talent within the club, capable of playing both as a centre-back and a defensive midfielder.
This switch of allegiance comes at a crucial stage in Pavic’s career, as he begins to establish himself within a top European club. While the immediate impact on either the German or Croatian national teams is limited given his age, the move provides Croatia with a potentially valuable asset in the future. It also underscores the increasing complexity of international football eligibility, with players often having dual nationalities and the freedom to choose their representation.
